李麗華生於梨園世家,父為京劇名伶李桂芳,母親為老旦張少泉。李麗華有「影壇長青樹」美譽。她在16歲加入上海藝華影業公司,憑《三笑》(1940)成名。1948年來港,她主演過《說謊世界》(1950)、《豪門孽債》(1950)、《誤佳期》(1951)、《小鳳仙》(1953)、《雪裡紅》(1956)等電影,1955年主演她的第一部彩色電影《海棠紅》(1955)。1960年李麗華加盟邵氏公司,主演《楊貴妃》(1962)、《武則天》(1963)、《楊乃武與小白菜》(1963)、《紅伶淚》(1965)、《觀世音》(1967)等片。李氏先後憑《新啼笑姻緣》(1964)及《揚子江風雲》(1969)兩度榮膺金馬獎最佳女主角。1973年李麗華移居美國,但仍應邀到台灣拍攝胡金銓導演的《迎春閣之風波》(1973)與張徹導演的《神拳三壯士》(1976)。1983年李麗華正式退出影壇。2015年及2016年,先後獲頒台灣電影金馬獎及香港電影金像獎終身成就獎。

Actor Li Li Hua was born into a family of Peking opera artists – her father was maestro Li Guifang and her mother, Zhang Shaoquan, was famous for her portrayals of old women. Known as “the Eternal Beauty of the Silver Screen”, Li joined Yi Hwa Film Company at age 16 and rose to stardom with Three Charming Smiles (1940). In 1948, she came to Hong Kong, where she continued to be a leading actress in Mandarin films and remained a superstar until the 1970s. Her best-known works include The Awful Truth (1950), The Insulted and Injured (1950), Should They Marry? (1951), General Chai and Lady Balsam (1953) and Blood in Snow (1956). In 1955, Li was cast in the leading role of her first colour film Blood Will Tell (1955). In 1960, she joined Shaw Brothers which cast her in Yang Kwei Fei (1962), Empress Wu Tse-Tien (1963), The Adulteress (1963), Vermilion Door (1965) and The Goddess of Mercy (1967), among other titles. She won Best Actress twice at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, for Between Tears and Laughter (1964) and Storm over the Yang-Tse River (1969). In 1973, Li emigrated to the US, but appeared in King Hu’s The Fate of Lee Khan (1973) and Chang Cheh’s Spiritual Fists (1976), both made in Taiwan. She retired in 1983. In 2015 and 2016, respectively, she was bestowed the Lifetime Achievement honour at the Golden Horse Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards.

白光原名史永芬,因見電影院投射機發出的一道白光而改藝名為白光。1938年,白光前赴日本東京女子大學攻讀音樂,後在《東亞平和之道》(1938)中擔任女主角。1943年白光回上海,主演《桃李爭春》成名,其後以主演《13號凶宅》(1947)、《626間諜網》(1948)、《人盡可夫》(1948)等電影,開拓了中國電影界「危險女性」的形象。1949年白光來港,主演《蕩婦心》(1949)、《血染海棠紅》(1949)、《一代妖姬》(1950)等電影。她其後創辦國光影業公司,自導自演《鮮牡丹》(1956)。她擅演風騷妖媚的壞女人,號稱「一代妖姬」,並以一把懶洋洋而感性纏綿的獨特聲線,經常在電影中演唱歌曲,如《蕩婦心》中的〈嘆十聲〉、〈東山一把青〉、〈等着你回來〉、〈如果沒有你〉等。1959年白光退出影壇,移居馬來西亞。

Singer-actress Shi Yongfen’s stage name, Bai Guang, refers to the beam of white light from a film projector. She studied music at Tokyo Woman’s Christian University in Japan from 1938 and played the leading role in the film East Asia, Road to Peace (1938). Upon return to Shanghai in 1943, she made a name for herself appearing in It’s Always Spring (1943). In the films that followed, such as House Number 13 (1947), Missing Document (1948) and She Married Three Times (1948), she sealed her position as the femme fatale of Chinese cinema. In 1949, Bai came to Hong Kong, where she appeared in A Forgotten Woman (1949), Blood Will Tell (1949) and A Strange Woman (1950). She also founded Guoguang Film Company to direct and star in Fresh Peony (1956). Dubbed “the Seductress of a Generation”, Bai was brilliant as the dangerous but irresistible woman. Her nonchalant and sensual voice was immortalised in movie soundtracks and pop songs. A Forgotten Woman contains a number of hits: “Sigh Ten Times”, “A Patch of Green on the East Mountain”, “Waiting for You”, and “If You were Not Here”. In 1959, Bai Guang retired and moved to Malaysia.

吳回原名吳耀民,畢業於廣東戲劇研究所附屬戲劇學校。1931年吳回與同學盧敦、李晨風等在廣州組劇團;其後來港加盟大觀聲片有限公司當演員,首部參演作品為《人海淚痕》(1940),多演善良的小市民角色。1941年吳回首次執導《今宵重見月團圓》(1941),是位著名多產的導演,40年的導演生涯裡創作逾200部電影,同時演出了百多部影片。吳回是中聯電影企業有限公司的創辦人之一,不少導演的代表作均為中聯出品,如創業作《家》(1953)和《父與子》(1954)、《大雷雨》(1954)、《烽火佳人》(1958)等。1954年,吳回與白燕、張活游合組山聯影業公司,導演《芸娘》(1954)、《長生塔》(1955)等。吳氏後又成立特藝影業公司,拍攝《勾魂使者》(1956)和《捉姦記》(1957)。1970年,吳回加入麗的電視任編導及演員,以在《變色龍》與《大地恩情》的演出最為人稱道。1994年,吳回獲香港電影導演會頒贈終身成就獎。

Mr Ng Wui

Born Ng Yiu Man, scriptwriter, director and actor Ng Wui received theatre training in the 1920s in a drama school in Guangzhou. In 1931, he founded a theatre group with schoolmates Lo Duen and Lee Sun Fung. Ng then came to Hong Kong where he joined Grandview Film Company and began acting in films. He played benevolent everyman characters in Poor Souls (1940) and other works. In 1941, Ng made his directorial debut with Tonight the Moon Is Full (1941). In a prolific and versatile career spanning 40 years, he helmed some 200 films and acted in more than a hundred. Ng was a key co-founder of Union Film Enterprise and many of the titles he directed were the studio’s works, such as Family (1953), Father and Son (1954), Big Thunderstorm (1954) and The Tormented Beauty (1958). In 1954, he founded Shan Luen Motion Picture Company with partners Pak Yin and Cheung Wood Yau. The studio’s creations included Madam Wan (1954) and The Immortality Pagoda (1955). Ng went on to establish his own studio, Tak Ngai Film Company, which produced The Fascinating Messenger (1956) and Caught in the Act (1957). In 1970, he joined RTV as a producer, director and actor. He is best remembered for his performances in the TV dramas Chameleon and Fatherland. Ng received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild in 1994.

Ms Pak Suet Sin

白雪仙女士

白雪仙原名陳淑良,父親為粵劇「小生王」白駒榮,12歲拜名伶薛覺先為師,16歲已於錦添花劇團任正印。1942年,白雪仙於澳門認識任劍輝,此後合作無間。1956年,白雪仙與任劍輝等合組仙鳳鳴劇團,創作不少才子佳人的戲寶。白雪仙戰前已參演電影,但至戰後才以刁蠻、活潑的角色及形象主演多部作品,如《生紅娘三戲張君瑞》(1952)、《唐伯虎點秋香》(1957)等;而不少仙鳳鳴戲寶亦改編成電影,如《帝女花》、《紫釵記》、《蝶影紅梨記》、《獅吼記》(1959)等。1968年白雪仙主演《李後主》後退出影壇,與任劍輝組成雛鳳鳴劇團培育後進,使任白的藝術得以後繼有人。2001年,白雪仙獲香港電影金像獎頒發終身成就獎。2008年,白雪仙獲香港藝術發展局頒發2007香港藝術發展獎之終身成就奬。

Ms Pak Suet Sin

Also known as Chan Suk Leung, Cantonese opera virtuoso and film actress Pak Suet Sin was the daughter of illustrious opera artist Pak Kui Wing. At the tender age of 12, she apprenticed under maestro Sit Kok Sin and, at 16, was already the principal artist of Kam Tim Fa Opera Troupe. In 1942, Pak made the acquaintance of virtuoso Yam Kim Fai in Macau and from then on the two developed a seamless partnership that lasted decades. In 1956, they founded Sin Fung Ming Opera Troupe, which created a number of “scholar and beauty” pieces. Pak had joined the film industry before the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, but it was in the 1950s that she became famous for her wilful and capricious on-screen persona, such as in How the Red Maid Thrice Mocked Cheung Kwun-shui (1952) and How the Scholar Tong Pak-fu Won the Maid Chau-heung (1957). Many of Sing Fung Ming’s stage works were adapted into movies, including The Flower Princess, The Legend of Purple Hairpin, Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom and The Lion’s Roar (all 1959). In 1968, Pak retired after her farewell performance in Tragedy of the Poet King. She was honoured with the Life Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2001. In 2008, she received the  Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s highest accolade, the Life Achievement Award, at the Arts Development Awards.


Ms Hung Sin Nui

紅線女原名鄺健廉,隨舅母何芙蓮學習粵劇,初在勝壽年劇團演出,藝名小燕紅,後由前輩靚少鳳為她改名紅線女。抗戰期間,紅線女獲粵劇名伶馬師曾提拔當正印花旦。兩人合作演出多齣著名粵劇,以「女腔」(後又稱「紅腔」)建立她的紅派藝術。1947年,紅線女開始拍電影,當中不少改編自粵劇如《審死官》(1948)、《刁蠻宮主》(1948)、《野花香》(1950)等,以演出刁蠻嬌嗔角色在銀幕獨樹一幟。紅線女是中聯電影企業有限公司股東之一,曾參演中聯作品《秋》(1954)、《天長地久》(1955)等;又主演光藝製片公司創業作《胭脂虎》(1955)和國語片《我是一個女人》(1955),被認為是50年代最出色的文藝片女星之一。1955年紅線女與馬師曾回廣州致力發展粵劇藝術,並從事粵劇演出和教育工作。紅線女在香港及內地共演過90多部電影,包括晚年回港主演的粵語戲曲電影《李香君》(1990)。

Ms Hung Sin Nui

Born Kwong Kin Lim, opera virtuoso and actress Hung Sin Nui learned the art of Cantonese opera from her aunt Ho Fu Lin. She joined Guangzhou’s Sing Sau Nin Opera Troupe, where she was known as Siu Yin Hung. It was opera master Leng Siu Fung who gave her the stage name Hung Sin Nui. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Hung was spotted by the famous Ma Si Tsang, who made her a principal actress at the age of 15. Hung performed alongside Ma on stage and soon developed what came to be known as the “Hung-style tone”. In 1947, she began appearing in movies, including opera adaptations such as The Judge Goes to Pieces (1948), The Spoiled Princess (1948) and Wild Flowers Are Sweeter (1950). She specialised in portraying spoilt and pouty women, and became a top actress of Cantonese feature dramas in the 1950s. A founding member of Union Film Enterprise, Hung played key parts in Union Film Enterprise productions, including Autumn (1954) and The Eternal Love (1955). She also starred in The Rouge Tigress (1955), the first film by Kong Ngee Motion Picture Production Company, as well as the Mandarin film It So Happens to a Woman (1955). Hung was regarded as one of the best drama movie actresses in the 1950s. In 1955, she returned to Guangzhou with Ma Si Tsang, whereupon she devoted herself to the promotion of Cantonese opera, and its education. During her career, Hung acted in more than 90 films in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Her final work was The Legend of Lee Heung Kwan (1990), a Cantonese opera film made in Hong Kong.

秦劍先生

秦劍原名陳健,又名陳子儀,曾用筆名陳情、司馬才華編劇,有「影壇神童」之譽。秦劍經石堅引薦,擔任導演胡鵬的場記。秦氏20歲已參與編劇,首個劇本為《二龍爭珠》(1948)。他與吳回合導《紅顏未老恩先斷》(1948)後,翌年獨立執導《滿江紅》(1949),1950年以《南海漁歌》嶄露頭角,直至執導中聯電影企業有限公司出品的《苦海明燈》(1953)始為觀眾受落。他亦是中聯創辦人之一,曾執導《慈母淚》(1953)、《父母心》(1955)等中聯作品。1955年,秦劍在星馬院商何氏家族的支持下,與陳文成立光藝製片公司,出品富摩登都巿色彩的粵語片,同時培植了謝賢、嘉玲、南紅、江雪、姜中平、楚原、龍剛等粵語片台前幕後新秀。執導國、粵語片逾60多部,大部分均由他親自編劇,有文藝言情、恐怖、驚險、懸疑及喜劇等不同風格的片種,如《九九九命案》(1956)、《椰林月》(1957)、《難兄難弟》(1960)和《追妻記》(1961)等。1965年秦劍加盟邵氏公司後拍攝多部國語片,如《何日君再來》(1966)、《碧海青天夜夜心》(1966)、《春蠶》(1969)等。1969 年,秦劍自縊離世。

Mr Chun Kim

Director and scriptwriter Chun Kim was born Chan Kin and was also known as Chan Zhi Yee. He adopted the pseudonyms Chan Ching and Sima Choi Wah for writing screenplays. Chun was introduced to the film industry by Sek Kin as a continuity man for director Wu Pang. This “Whiz Kid of the Cinema”, as he was called, began penning scripts at age 20; his first work was made into the film Two Dragons Chase after a Pearl (1948). In the same year, he co-directed Separated Too Soon (1948) with Ng Wui. At age 23, Chun helmed For My Country (1949) and, a year later, caught the eye of the critics and the public alike with Fishermen’s Song of the South Sea (1950). By the time he made A Son is Born (1953) for Union Film Enterprise, his talent was obvious. Chun directed numerous titles for Union Film, of which he was a co-founder, including A Mother’s Tears (1953) and Parents’ Hearts (1955). In 1955, Chun founded Kong Ngee Motion Picture Production Company with Chan Man. The studio produced modern Cantonese films with urban settings and nurtured actors and directors, including big names like Patrick Tse Yin, Kar Ling, Nam Hung, Kong Suet, Keung Chung Ping, Chor Yuen and Lung Kong. In his 43 years of life, Chun helmed more than 60 Cantonese and Mandarin films in an assortment of genres, also scripting the majority of them. Among his exemplary Cantonese films are Dragnet (1956), The Whispering Palms (1957), My Intimate Partner (1960) and How to Get a Wife (1961); while Till the End of Time (1966), The Long Voyage Home (1966) and Farewell My Love (1969) are some of his notable Mandarin creations. Chun tragically took his own life in 1969.

Ms Yu So Chow

于素秋女士

于素秋原名于小圓,出生於戲劇世家,父親是京劇演員于占元。她8歲學刀馬旦,9歲登台,擅打脫手北派,在京劇《白蛇傳》中曾表演連續踢12支紅纓槍的技巧,亦曾隨梅蘭芳學舞劍。1948年于素秋從影,早年演國語片如《大俠復仇記》(1949)、《十三太保》(1951)等。她共演出200多部影片,其中170多部是武俠片,大部分由黎坤蓮現場代為配音的粵語片,包括《關東三女俠》(1961)、《仙鶴神針》(1961)、《火燒紅蓮寺》上、下集 (1963)、《碧血金釵》上、下集(1963)及「如來神掌」系列等;另外30多部則為粵劇戲曲片如《無敵楊家將》(1961)、偵探片如《十三號兇殺案》(1960)和時裝動作片「女飛俠黃鶯」系列等。1966年,她與粵劇名伶麥炳榮結婚後息影,移居美國。

Ms Yu So Chow

Actress and Cantonese opera artist Yu So Chow was born Yu Siu Yuen to a family of actors. Her father was the famous Peking opera virtuoso Yu Zhanyuan. She began her training in female warrior roles aged eight and made her debut a year later, performing northern-style martial arts. In the Peking opera The Legend of the White Snake, Yu wowed the audience by kicking 12 flying red-tasselled spears consecutively. She also learned the art of sword wielding from maestro Mei Lanfang. Yu’s cinematic career began in 1948, and her works included Mandarin films such as The Revenge of the Great Swordsman (1949) and The Thirteen That Go Astray (1951). In total, Yu acted in some 200 titles, 170 of which were martial arts movies. Among the most memorable ones are The Three Chivalrous Girls of the Northeast (1961), The Secret Book (1961), Burning of the Red Lotus Monastery, Parts One and Two, (1963), The Azure Blood and the Golden Pin, Part One and Conclusion (1963) and the popular “Buddha’s Palm” series. Yu also appeared in Cantonese opera films such as The Invincible Yeung Generals (1961), crime thrillers like House Number 13 (1960) and action movies such as the “Wong Ang the Heroine” series. In 1966, Yu married Cantonese opera virtuoso Mak Bing Wing and retired from the limelight. Yu lived in the United States until her death in 2017.

梁醒波原名梁侍海,生於戲劇世家,父親是新加坡著名武生聲架悅。梁醒波17歲隨丑生鬼馬流和六分大膽根習藝,19歲升為正印小武,後任文武生,是星洲「四大天王」之一。1939年,梁醒波受邀來港加入馬師曾的太平劇團。抗戰後梁氏因身體變胖而改演丑生,並於1952年一次選舉中被票選為「丑生王」。1950年梁氏在主演《臨老入花叢》(1950)後從影,演出逾400部影片,當中不少為粵語歌唱片和戲曲片,並曾創辦利影影業公司和達豐影業公司,大部分出品為喜劇如《做慣乞兒懶做官》(1953)、「呆佬」系列,以及他女兒文蘭主演的《甜姐兒》(1957)、《三傻尋女》(1963)等。他演的無論是主角或配角,正派或反派,窮或富,戲曲或時裝片,悲劇或喜劇,皆恰如其份,演技出神入化。1967年,電視廣播有限公司啟播,梁醒波應邀擔任綜合節目《歡樂今宵》的主持。梁醒波於1976年獲頒授M.B.E.勳銜,為演藝界首位獲此殊榮的藝人。

Mr Leung Sing Poh

Actor and Cantonese opera artist Leung Sing Poh was born Leung Si Hoi to an operatic family – his father was renowned Singaporean martial actor Sing Kar Yuet. At age 17, Leung apprenticed under clown role experts Gwai Ma Lau and Luk Fan Dai Dam Gan. At 19, he became a principal martial arts actor. His repertoire soon extended to scholarly roles, as he made a name for himself as one of the “Four Kings of Cantonese Opera” in Singapore. In 1939, he was invited by Ma Si Tsang to join Tai Ping Opera Troupe in Hong Kong. The end of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression saw Leung switching to clown roles – weight gain had given him a rotund and comedic appearance. He became so successful playing the jester that he won the title “King of Comic Roles ” in a 1952 poll. Leung made his big screen debut with The Elderly Gentleman Searches for Romance (1950) and went on to appear in around 400 titles, mostly Cantonese movie musicals and Cantonese opera films. Leung founded Lee Ying Film Company and Dafeng Film Company, which produced comedies such as A Beggar’s Life for Me (1953) and “The Dunce” series, as well as films starring his daughter Man Lan, such as Darling Girl (1957) and Three Fools Searching for Their Daughter (1963). Nicknamed “Uncle Po”, Leung’s acting was always spot on and entertaining, regardless of the relative importance and nature of his character or the setting. In 1967, he joined TVB and his nightly appearance on the legendary variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight is a fond memory for generations of Hongkongers. In 1976, Leung became the first showbiz star to be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

鄧寄塵先生

40年代鄧寄塵在廣州播演諧趣廣播劇,能夠一人扮演八種截然不同的聲音,有「諧劇大王」之美譽。1950年,鄧寄塵來港,加盟麗的呼聲主持《鄧寄塵諧劇》,同時開始接拍電影。他演的電影絕大部分是諧趣喜劇,包括《笑星降地球》(1952)、《荒唐鏡五鬥陳夢吉》(1957),與新馬師曾合作的「兩傻」電影系列尤其著名;二人精於「爆肚」,特點是一個扮傻,另一個充醒目,配合得天衣無縫。他主演超過150多部電影,早年更兼任《范斗》(1951)、《兩仔爺》((1951)、《失魂魚》(1951)等影片的編劇。1975年移民加拿大,偶爾回港客串演出電影,如《鬼馬智多星》(1981)、《緣份》(1984)等。

Mr Tang Kei Chen

Actor Tang Kei Chen was a radio broadcaster in the 1940s. He was well loved for his humour and ability to impersonate voices, which won him the moniker “King of Comedy”. Tang came to Hong Kong in 1950 and hosted Tang Kei Chen’s Comedy Hour on Radio Rediffusion. He appeared in comedies such as A Comet of Laughter Lands on Earth (1952) and The Feuds between Fong Tong-geng and Chan Mung-kat (1957). The most famous was the “Two Fools” series in which he played a fool alongside a smart-aleck played by Sun Ma Si Tsang. Their interaction was seamless and featured lots of witty improvisation. In total, Tang acted in more than 150 films, doubling as the scriptwriter in some of the earlier ones such as A Star of Mischief Is Born (1951), Daddy and Sonny (1951) and The Scatterbrain (1951). Tang emigrated to Canada in 1975, but he returned to Hong Kong from time to time for guest appearances in movies such as All the Wrong Clues (1981) and Behind the Yellow Line (1984).

鄧碧雲原名鄧芍芙,13歲已晉身粵劇界,15歲獲升為正印花旦。1950年,鄧碧雲進入電影圈,形象百變,男女扮相皆宜,既能唱平喉子喉兼扮鬼扮馬,又能演刁蠻媳婦、聰慧賢婦、傻大姐、順德「媽姐」等不同類型的角色,因此有「萬能旦后」美譽。鄧碧雲以演出粵語歌唱片和喜劇為主,逾200部電影,包括《鐵嘴雞》(1956)、《夜夜念奴嬌》(1956)、《扭紋新抱惡家姑》(1956)、《亞蘭嫁亞瑞》(1957)、《爛賭二當老婆》(1964)、《傻大姐當兵》(1965)等,期間鄧氏曾斥資攝製《假鳳虛鸞》(1956)。1968年,轉向電視圈發展,先後主演過多部家傳戶曉的電視劇,包括《家變》(1977)、《變色龍》(1956)、《名流情史》(1978)等。她在《季節》(1987-1988)中的「媽打」形象最為深入民心,並以此形象演出電影《南北媽打》(1988)。

Ms Tang Bik Wan

Born Tang Cheuk Fu, opera artist and actress Tang Bik Wan began learning Cantonese opera as a child, and by the age of 15 was already playing principal female roles. She was highly versatile – she sang in both male and female voices, and played male roles, spoilt daughters-in-law, kind and wise ladies, maids and, most notably, the comical pushover. This ability earned her the moniker “the Omnipotent Queen”. Most of the 200 titles she had a hand in were Cantonese movie musicals or comedies. Among the better known were Lady with a Silver and Bitter Tongue (1956), Tonight and Every Night (1956), A Nagging Wife Meets Her Fierce Mother-in-Law (1956), Ah Lan Marries Ah Shui (1957), The Gambler’s Wife (1964) and A Girl in Army (1965). Tang also invested in a film of her own, titled The Fake Marriage (1956). In 1968, she switched to television, becoming famous in A House Is Not a Home (1977), Chameleon (1978) and Love Affairs (1978). Her performance as the matriarch in The Seasons (1987-1988) was so popular that the character was adapted for the film Mother vs Mother (1988).
