張活游原名張乾裕。廣州八和會館粵劇人才養成所第二期畢業生, 1936年張氏參加粵劇團擔任小生、小武角色。1939年來港從影,第一部影片為《大破銅網陣》(1939)。1949至1952年是他事業的高峰期,每年演出20多部影片,包括紅極一時的《蕭月白》上、下集(1949)。他擅演文弱書生、好好先生、孝子慈父的角色。1952年,張活游與一班以提高粵語片水平為己任的同僚合組中聯電影企業有限公司,並參與創業作《家》(1953)、《春》(1953)、《秋》(1954)、《父與子》(1954)、《西廂記》(1956)等中聯作品。1954年,張活游與白燕、吳回合組山聯影業公司,演出其子楚原導演的作品《可憐天下父母心》(1960)。60年代張氏又為楚原和南紅的玫瑰影業公司任策劃,出品《黑玫瑰》(1965)和《黑玫瑰與黑玫瑰》(1966)。張活游於1976年加入電視廣播有限公司演電視劇,1982年退休。

Also known as Cheung Kin Yu, Cheung Wood Yau began his career in 1936 as a principal actor in both civil and martial roles in Cantonese opera. But it was in Hong Kong three years later, in the film Breaking through the Bronze Net (1939), that he made his big screen debut. Cheung’s career peaked between 1949 and 1952 when he averaged an output of 20-plus films a year, including the two-part blockbuster Crime Doesn’t Pay (1949). Cheung specialised in portraying weak scholars, “Mr Nice Guys”, obedient sons and loving fathers. In 1952, together with likeminded partners such as Ng Cho Fan and Pak Yin, he co-founded Union Film Enterprise with the aim of improving the quality of Cantonese cinema. He was involved in the studio’s founding films: Family (1952), Spring (1953), Autumn (1954), Father and Son (1954) and Romance at the Western Chamber (1956). In 1954, he established Shan Luen Motion Picture Company with Pak Yin and Ng Wui, and went on to appear in his son Chor Yuen’s classic work The Great Devotion (1960). In the 1960s, he joined Chor Yuen and Nam Hung’s Rose Motion Picture, which made Black Rose (1965) and Spy with My Face (1966). Cheung began appearing in television dramas on TVB from 1976. He retired in 1982.

吳楚帆原名吳鉅璋,1932年華北水災,吳楚帆因參與母校聖保羅中學的賑災義演,獲聯華主持人羅明佑賞識而進入影壇。於首作《夜半槍聲》(1932)吳氏便已擔任男主角,其後演出抗日影片《生命線》(1935)與《人生曲》(1937)而成名,憑《人生曲》深受觀眾歡迎,獲「華南影帝」的稱號。銀幕前後,他也是位熱心推動義舉的人,在1949年發起「粵語片清潔運動」,並因此促成同年成立華南電影工作者聯合會,1952年吳楚帆又與20位志同道合的電影工作者,以拍攝反映社會現實、維護藝術尊嚴的影片為宗旨,創辦中聯電影企業有限公司,並任董事長和新人訓練班導師。他憑中聯作品《春》(1953)的演出,而獲中華人民共和國文化部頒一等獎。吳楚帆後與李晨風創辦華聯電影製片有限公司,拍攝了出色的作品如《寒夜》(1955)、《人海孤鴻》(1960)。他參演過的作品逾200部。七十年代,吳楚帆於粵語片式微後退休,晚年移民加拿大。1993年,吳楚帆獲香港電影金像獎頒發特別紀念獎。

Mr Ng Cho Fan

Actor Ng Cho Fan, also known as Ng Kui Cheung, was discovered by United Photoplay’s man-in-charge, Lo Ming Yau, while performing at a charity show at St Paul’s Secondary School, his alma mater. He made his debut as the male lead in Gunshot at Midnight (1932), but shot to fame with the anti-Japanese film Lifeline (1935); another anti-Japanese film, Song of Life (1937), won him the title “the Movie King of South China”. Both on-screen and off, Ng was social-minded and passionate about volunteering his services. He was one of the initiators of a campaign to “clean up” the Cantonese film industry in 1949, a move that led to the birth of the South China Film Industry Workers Union that same year. In 1952, he founded Union Film Enterprise with 20 likeminded filmmakers and actors, including Lee Tit, Ng Wui, Cheung Ying, Pak Yin, and Wong Man Lei. The goal was to make serious movies that offered a mirror of the realities of life in Hong Kong. Ng’s role in the 1953 production Spring won him the First Class Individual Achievement Award from the Cultural Ministry of the People’s Republic of China. Together with Lee Sun Fung, he founded Hwa Lien Film Company, which made classics It Was a Cold Winter Night (1955) and The Orphan (1960). Ng retired in the 1970s, having starred in more than 200 films. In 1993, he was awarded the Special Commemoration Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

新馬師曾原名鄧永祥,童年時因父母離異,被庶母刻薄離家出走,因而輾轉跟細紀、何壽年學藝,走紅粵劇界,有「神童」之稱。因模仿馬師曾出色,師父為他改名新馬師曾。成長後他曾跟薛覺先學藝,又赴上海習京劇,唱腔自成一格,創出新馬腔。1931年自組新馬劇團,以《萬惡淫為首》、《光緒皇夜祭珍妃》等劇廣受歡迎。1936年新馬師曾開始拍電影,首部作品為《美滿姻緣》(1936)。他除了將其首本名劇拍成電影,亦與鄧寄塵合演「兩傻」電影系列及《分期付款娶老婆》(1961)、《飛哥跌落坑渠》(1967)、《怪俠一枝梅》(1967)等賣座喜劇,演出逾300部電影。1960年,新馬師曾成立永祥唱片公司出版他的作品。由於年少家貧,因此他一生熱衷行善,有「慈善伶王」的美譽。

Actor and Cantonese opera artist Tang Wing Cheung is best known by his stage name Sun Ma Si Tsang and the moniker “the King of Male Principal Roles”. His parents divorced when he was very young and he ran away from home to escape his stepmother’s maltreatment. He apprenticed under Cantonese opera artists Sai Gei and Ho Sau Nin, becoming known at a young age as “the Child Prodigy”. As he excelled at imitating virtuoso Ma Si Tsang, his master gave him the stage name “Sun Ma Si Tsang” (“New Ma Si Tsang”). Tsang went on to train under another virtuoso, actor and composer Sit Kok Sin, and even learned Peking opera in Shanghai. His unique singing style came to be known as the “Sun Ma style”. In 1931, Tsang founded Sun Ma Cantonese Opera Troupe and shot to fame playing in Lust Is the Worst Vice and Emperor Guangxu Paying Homage to Concubine Zhen at Night, works which became his signature pieces. Tsang made his big screen debut in 1936 with The Perfect Match (1936). Besides adapting operatic works for the cinema, he was also famous for comedic roles alongside Tang Kee Chan, such as in the “Two Fools” series and in Instalment on Marriage (1961), Teddy Boy in the Gutter (1967), A Strange Daredevil (1967) and other much-loved comedies. By 1976, Tsang had made more than 300 movies. In 1960, he founded Wing Cheung Records Company to release his own works. His lifelong commitment to philanthropy earned him the moniker “the Opera King of Charity”.

白燕原名陳玉屏,1936年投考廣州國聯電影公司並開始從影,首作《並蒂蓮》因資金問題未能完成。1937年,白燕應導演陳天之邀來港發展,主演《錦繡河山》正式開始其銀色旅途。翌年,她憑《上海火線後》(1938)成名;於戰前已主演多部作品,如《氣壯山河》(1938)、《蝴蝶夫人》(1940)等。為促成戰後第一部粵語片的製作,白燕與吳楚帆減片酬演出《郎歸晚》(1947),影片大受歡迎,引起戰後製作粵語片的熱潮。1952年,白燕與一眾充滿熱誠的電影工作者合股籌辦中聯電影企業有限公司,並參演多部中聯的作品,如《大雷雨》(1954)、《春殘夢斷》(1955)等,並以《春》(1953)獲頒中華人民共和國文化部頒發一等獎。她演出的作品逾300部,形象百變,但最具代表性的乃其賢妻良母角色,如《敗家仔》(1952)、《寒夜》(1955) 等。1954年,白燕與吳回、張活游合組山聯影業公司,出品《芸娘》(1954)、《可憐天下父母心》(1960)等作品。1964年主演《瘋婦》(1964)後息影。

Born Chan Yuk Ping, actress Pak Yin was accepted by a film studio in Guangzhou in 1936, but the film that was to be her debut, Twin Lotuses, fell through due to financial troubles. In 1937, she was invited to come to Hong Kong to act in The Magnificent Country (1937) and Shanghai under Fire (1938). Her career flourished and she made a number of films in the pre-war period, including The Magnificent Ones (1938) and Madame Butterfly (1940). When the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression ended, she teamed up with Ng Cho Fan to initiate the production of the first post-war Cantonese film, My Love Comes Too Late (1947), which depicted Japanese atrocities in China. It paved the way for more Cantonese films that followed. In 1952, Pak co-founded Union Film Enterprise, and went on to appear in Union productions, including Big Thunderstorm (1954) and Anna (1955). She won the First Class Individual Achievement Award from the Cultural Ministry of the People’s Republic of China for her role in Spring (1953). In total, Pak made more than 300 films covering a range of roles. But she was most notable as a loving wife and doting mother, as in The Prodigal Son (1952) and It Was a Cold Winter Night (1955). In 1954, with Ng Wui and Cheung Wood Yau, she founded Shan Luen Motion Picture Company, which produced Madam Wan (1960) and The Great Devotion (1960) among other classics. Pak Yin retired in 1964 after making A Mad Woman (1964).

周璇原名蘇璞,後改名王小紅、周小紅。有「金嗓子」之稱。1931年,她加入黎錦暉創辦的明月歌舞團,因演唱曲詞「與敵人周旋於沙場之上」出色,黎替她改名周璇。1935年開始拍電影,1937年憑《馬路天使》一舉成名。片中歌曲〈天涯歌女〉和〈四季歌〉傳頌至今。1938年,周璇簽約國華影業公司,主演《西廂記》(1940)、《三笑》(1940)影片。由於歌藝深受觀眾喜愛,她主演的電影都例必加插主唱歌曲。淪陷期間,她成為中華電影聯合股份有限公司的主要演員,拍攝了《漁家女》(1943)、《鸞鳳和鳴》(1944)、《鳳凰于飛》(1944)等名片。1946年周璇應大中華影業公司老闆蔣伯英之邀,來港主演《長相思》(1947)、《花外流鶯》(1948)、《歌女之歌》(1948)、《莫負青春》(1949)等電影;後替永華,電影製片廠有限公司拍攝《清宮秘史》(1948)。周璇在拍畢《彩虹曲》(1953)後,返上海定居。

Born Su Pu and also known as Wang Xiao Hong and Zhou Xiao Hong, singer and actress Zhou Xuan was dubbed “the Golden Voice” and was voted one of Shanghai’s “Ten Best Singers”. She joined a performance troupe in 1931 at age 12, and began appearing in movies from 1935. Street Angel (1937) made her an overnight sensation and the theme songs she sang, “Wandering Songstress” and “Song of the Four Seasons” became well-known tunes. In 1938, she signed a deal with Guohua Film Company, which led to her appearing in The West Chamber (1940) and Three Charming Smiles (1940). She also sang songs for the soundtrack for every film she made. During the Japanese occupation, Zhou was a principal actress in China United Film Company, starring in Daughter of the Fisherman (1943), Songs of Harmony (1944) and Songs of the Phoenix (1944). In 1946, she was invited to Hong Kong by Jiang Boying, owner of Great China Film Company, to play in An All-consuming Love (1947), Orioles Banished from the Flowers, Song of a Songstress (both 1948) and Waste Not our Youth (1949). She also acted in Sorrows of the Forbidden City (1948), a Yung Hwa Motion Pictures production. Rainbow as You Wish (1953) was Zhou Xuan’s last film in Hong Kong before returning to Shanghai.

張瑛原名張溢生,張氏在1937年參演《夜明珠》開始從影之路,1940年以《人海淚痕》成名。戰後回港,張瑛主演《此恨綿綿無絕期》(1948)、《珠江淚》(1950)、《敗家仔》(1952)等片。從影以來參演300多部影片,多演懦弱小生角色。1952年,張氏與一群熱衷藝術的粵語片電影工作者合組中聯電影企業有限公司,並演出創業作《家》(1953)、《苦海明燈》(1953)和《危樓春曉》(1953)等作品。張瑛其後亦籌組過兩家電影公司,包括與謝益之合組的華僑電影企業公司,創業作為《雷雨》(1957),以及豪華影片公司,作品包括《千方百計搶財神》(1962)等。1956年張瑛首次執導《家和萬事興》(1956),其他導演作品包括《第七號司機》(1958)、《回魂夜》(1962)、《倚天屠龍記》上、下集(1963)等。張氏在70年代粵語片式微後轉投電視圈,1969年,加盟電視廣播有限公司,後轉投麗的電視,代表作包括《天蠶變》、《大地恩情》等。張瑛在1984年往加拿大拍攝電影《又見冤家》(1988年公映)時病逝。

Born Cheung Yik Sang, actor and director Cheung Ying made his acting debut in The Glowing Pearl in 1937 and rose to fame in 1940 with Poor Souls. He followed this with Hong Kong-made classics Everlasting Regret (1948), Dawn Must Come (1950) and The Prodigal Son (1952). In a career that spanned more than four decades and 300 films, Cheung was known as “the Actor with a Thousand Faces”, though he is best remembered for portraying cowardly characters. In 1952, he co-founded Union Film Enterprise with other Cantonese film actors and filmmakers, and appeared in the studio’s works such as Family (1953), A Son Is Born (1953) and In the Face of Demolition (1953). He established two more studios, namely Overseas Chinese Films (with Tse Yik Chi) and Hoover Film Company. The mid-1950s saw Cheung going into directing: A Peaceful Family Will Prosper (1956) was followed by 14 titles that included Driver No. 7 (1958), The Night the Spirit Returns (1962) and the two-part Story of the Sword and the Sabre (1963). He became an actor at TVB in 1969 and later joined RTV; Reincarnated and Fatherland were among his best-known TV dramas. In 1984, Cheung died in Canada while filming Love Me Love My Dad, which was released in 1988.

李鐵先生

李鐵原名李毓楨。1931年,李鐵入讀香港聯華港廠第一期演員訓練班,畢業後在《夜半槍聲》(1932)、《古寺鵑聲》(1932)等影片中演出和擔任場記。1933年,李氏轉習編劇、導演、攝影、剪接、音樂及沖印。1936年李鐵執導《六十六號屋》(1936),翌年憑《人生曲》(1937)成名。1952年李氏與二十多位志同道合的電影工作者成立中聯電影企業有限公司,執導了多部關懷社會和名著改編的出色作品,如《人海淚痕》(1940)、《危樓春曉》(1953)、《天長地久》(1955)等。此外,戲曲片亦是李鐵的專長,他曾成立寶鷹影業公司,拍攝粵語戲曲片《紫釵記》(1959)和《蝶影紅梨記》(1959)。李鐵一生執導過百部電影,在1980年拍罷豫劇《包青天》後,退出影壇。1994年,李鐵獲頒香港電影導演會終身成就獎。

Lee Tit is the screen name of Lee Yuk Ching. As a young man, the actor and director enrolled in the acting school of United Photoplay in 1931, and subsequently played parts in Gunshot at Midnight (1932) and Cry of the Cuckoo in the Temple (1932) among other titles, while doubling as the continuity man. In 1933, he learned the techniques of scriptwriting, directing, cinematography, editing and sound through working on different productions. In 1936, he made his directorial debut with House Number 66, but it was Song of Life (1937) that propelled him to fame. In 1952, he was one of the key filmmakers who founded Union Film Enterprise. Lee had a penchant for adapting classical literature and directing social realist dramas. Among his notable works were Poor Souls (1940), In the Face of Demolition (1953) and The Eternal Love (1955). Lee also had a flair for opera films. In 1959, he founded Hawks Film Company to adapt Cantonese opera classics The Legend of Purple Hairpin (1959) and Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom (1959) for the silver screen. Lee helmed more than 100 Cantonese films in total. He retired in 1980 after shooting a movie based on the Yu opera Judge Bao. In 1994, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild.

胡鵬先生

胡鵬生於上海。1931年,胡鵬在電影院擔任行政職務。1936年胡氏來港,在國家片場工作,早年主要拍文藝片,首次執導的作品是《夜送寒衣》(1938),其後拍了唐滌生編劇的《大地晨鐘》(1940)、歌壇名伶小明星主演的《多情燕子歸》(1941)、秦劍編劇的《烽火漁村》(1948)和《天下婦人心》(1948)及描寫小明星一生的《別離人對奈何天》(1951)等。胡鵬接拍首部黃飛鴻電影《黃飛鴻傳上集之鞕風滅獨》(1949)後,即大受歡迎,隨後便改拍功夫片。胡鵬從影40年執導近200部電影中,58部為「黃飛鴻」系列作品。他還執導過喜劇《兒孫福》(1955)和粵劇戲曲片《花燈記》(1960)等。1993年出版的回憶錄《我與黃飛鴻》,詳述他拍攝「黃飛鴻」系列與其他影片的經歷。1999年,胡鵬獲香港影評人協會頒贈金紫荊獎終身成就獎。

Mr Wu Pang

Born in Shanghai, director Wu Pang launched his film career after moving to Hong Kong in 1936. His first film, Farewell on a Winter Night (1938), was followed by The Tolling Bell (1940), which was scripted by the great Cantonese opera playwright Tong Tik Sang, and The Sentimental Swallow Returns (1941) starring the beloved Cantonese opera singer Siu Ming Sing. Wu also directed Fishing Village in the War (1948) and A Woman’s Heart (1948), both scripted by Chun Kim, and Parting Unto Sky’s End (1951), a portrait of the life of Siu Ming Sing. In a career spanning four decades, Wu helmed 200 titles. Of these, 58 belong to the “Wong Fei Hung” series, including the first one, The Whip That Smacks the Candle (1949). Wu also shot the comedy Everyone Loves Grandpa (1955) and Cantonese opera film The Festive Lantern (1960). Notably, he made the two-part Story of the Vulture Conqueror (1958 & 1959), the first screen adaptation of Louis Cha’s classic martial arts novel. In 1993, Wu published memoir Wong Fei Hung and I, in which he recounts the shooting of the “Wong Fei Hung” series and other movies. The Hong Kong Film Critics Association presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.

任劍輝女士

任劍輝原名任麗初,又名任婉儀。任劍輝自小隨姨母小叫天學習粵劇,14歲拜黃侶俠為師,是出色的女文武生。1939年,任氏加入全女班群芳艷影,此後與不少花旦合作。任劍輝扮相溫文爾雅,有「戲迷情人」之稱;戰前已於電影客串演出,及至1951年才以《情困武潘安》正式參演電影,演出逾200部影片。雖則她於《自梳女》(1954)、《媽姐淚》(1954)等影片擔任女主角,但在大部分作品中皆反串男角,亦有不少大玩性別倒置的作品,如《花木蘭》(1951)、《為情顛倒》(1952)、《此子何來問句妻》(1954)等。任劍輝最擅長才子佳人粵劇名作,不少更被搬上銀幕,如《洛神》(1957)、《火網梵宮十四年》(1958)、《六月雪》(1959)、《帝女花》(1959)、《紫釵記》(1959)等,演出的電影逾300部。1968年,任劍輝主演《李後主》後退出影壇,致力培育粵劇後進。1995年,任劍輝獲香港電影金像獎頒發戲曲電影百年殿堂大獎。

Ms Yam Kim Fai

Born Yam Lee Chor and also known as Yam Yuen Yee, Cantonese opera virtuoso and film actress Yam Kim Fai learned the art of Cantonese opera under her aunt Siu Kiu Tin and then Wong Lui Hap. In 1939, she joined an all-woman opera troupe and began partnering with various leading ladies on stage, cross-dressing as the male lead. She was dashing and elegant, as evidenced by her moniker ‘the Audience Charmer’. Yam had begun making appearances in films in the pre-war years, but it was The Valiant Poon On Perplexed by Love in 1951 that cast her as the lead for the first time. She went on to play the leading part in more than 200 movies. Most saw her play the male protagonist or engaged in gender switching, as in Lady General Fa Muk-lan (1951), Lovesick (1952) and Whose Son Is This? (1954). The exceptions were The Bachelor Girl (1954) and The Maidservant’s Sad Tale (1954), where she played a woman. Yam is best remembered for her male scholar or martial roles in Cantonese opera works, many of which had been made into film such as The Nymph of the River Lo (1957), A Buddhist Recluse for 14 Years (1958), The Summer Snow (1959), The Flower Princess (1959) and The Legend of Purple Hairpin (1959). Yam appeared in a total of more than 300 films. She retired in 1968 after Tragedy of the Poet King (1968) and spent the rest of her life nurturing young talent for Cantonese opera. In 1995, she was presented with the 100 Years Opera Movie Hall Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

石堅先生

石堅原名石榮璋,年少時因體弱多病而習武,精通多種武藝。石堅1939年從影,初期任化妝師,後來才當上演員。1940年,石堅主演的《血海花》首次在銀幕上演出。50、60年代,石堅演出的電影逾數百部,其中以武俠片佔多數,包括「方世玉」系列的「白眉道人」、「如來神掌」系列的「天殘腳」、《倚天屠龍記》(1963)的「金毛獅王」,但最深入民心當推「黃飛鴻」系列影片中的反派角色「奸人堅」。此外,石堅亦在很多時裝片中演出,包括飾演慈祥爺爺的《玉女親情》(1967)和少林叛徒的《龍爭虎鬥》(1973)等。70年代中,石堅加入電視廣播有限公司任藝員,在電視劇中多演正派人物,拍攝過《狂潮》(1976)、《倚天屠龍記》(1978)、《射鵰英雄傳》(1983)等名劇。1992年,石堅在拍罷為他度身訂造的電影《奸人世家》(1994)後便退出影壇。1996年,石堅獲香港影評人協會頒贈金紫荊獎終身成就獎。2003年,石氏再獲香港電影金像獎頒贈專業精神獎。

Mr Sek Kin

Shek Wing Cheung, better known by his stage name Sek Kin, was one of the most eminent actors of villain roles in Hong Kong cinema. Sek had taken up martial arts as a child to improve his health and was soon proficient in various types of martial arts. In 1939, he became a make-up artist for film; a year later, he debuted as an actor in Flower in a Sea of Blood (1940). In the 1950s and 1960s, Sek performed in several hundred productions, mostly martial arts films, including the “Fong Sai Yuk” series in which he played a white-browed Taoist monk, as “Mighty Crushing Foot” in Buddha’s Palm, and as the “Golden Lion” in Story of the Sword and the Sabre (1963). But he was most outstanding as a villain in the “Wong Fei Hung” series. Sek also acted in a number of modern-day dramas – he was a kind grandpa in The Love of an Innocent Girl (1967) and a Shaolin traitor in Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon (1973). He joined TVB in the mid-1970s, appearing in serial dramas such as Hotel (1976), Story of the Sword and the Sabre (1978) and Story of the Vulture Conqueror (1983). In 1992, after playing an antagonist role custom-made for him in Hong Kong Adam’s Family (1994), he retired from the scene. In 1996, Sek was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Film Critics Association. In 2003, he received the Professional Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
