中國電影先驅,與長兄黎海山和四兄黎北海創辦新世界戲院和民新製造影畫片有限公司,並參與製作香港首部劇情短片《莊子試妻》(1914)和長片《胭脂》(1925)。他亦是拍攝紀錄片的先驅,早於1923年已遠赴出生地日本拍攝新聞紀錄片《中國競技員赴日本第六屆遠東運動會》和赴北京拍攝京劇名伶梅蘭芳演出的紀錄片。孫中山北伐期間,黎先生曾赴前線拍攝紀錄片《建國史的一頁》(1941年再剪輯成《勳業千秋》)。1926年,黎民偉往上海創辦民新影片股份有限公司,在電影題材和技術上進行積極的探索,拍攝了《西廂記》(1927)、《木蘭從軍》(1928)等影片。1930年他與羅明佑、吳性栽等合組聯華影業製片印刷有限公司(上海),民新併入成為聯華一廠,培育了如阮玲玉、金燄、黎莉莉、陳燕燕等一代影星,拍攝了不少中國經典電影。戰後回港,黎民偉亦參與建設永華電影製片廠有限公司,擔任片廠的洗印技術顧問。

Mr Lai Man Wai

A trailblazer in Chinese film history, Lai Man Wai was active in the early decades of the 20th century, an era synonymous with the dawn of Hong Kong cinema. Together with his brothers, Lai Hoi Shan and Lai Buk Hoi, he founded the New World Cinema and China Sun Motion Picture Company. He was involved in the production of Hong Kong’s first short feature film, Chuang Tzu Tests His Wife (1914), as well as the city’s first full-length feature, Rouge (1925). Lai was also a pioneering documentarist who, in 1923, went to Japan to record the Sixth Far Eastern Championship Games, and to Beijing to film a performance by Peking opera artist Mei Lanfang. During the Northern Expedition, a military campaign led by Chiang Kai-Shek in the 1920s, Lai travelled to the front line to shoot footage that was subsequently edited into the documentary A Page of History in 1941. In 1926, Lai founded China Sun Shanghai. The studio explored different subjects and filming techniques, and produced epics such as Way Down West (1927) and Mulan Joins the Army (1928). In 1930, China Sun became Lianhua Studios through a merger. Lianhua nurtured a generation of actors, including Ruan Lingyu, Jin Yan, Li Lili and Chen Yanyan, and made dozens of classics of Chinese cinema.

林楚楚原名林美意,香港早期女演員。生於加拿大溫哥華,在當地華僑學校受教育,中英文俱佳。12歲時回港探望母親,與黎灼灼成為同窗,認識了黎灼灼的六叔黎民偉,1919年與黎民偉結婚,婚後成為丈夫開拓電影事業的得力助手。1924年民新製造影畫片有限公司拍攝第一部故事長片《胭脂》(1925),她即成為女主角。她亦參演多齣上海民新影片股份有限公司和聯華影業製片印刷有限公司的影片,包括《西廂記》(1927)、《木蘭從軍》(1928)、《故都春夢》(1930)、《天倫》(1935)、《慈母曲》(1937)等。戰後回港,她繼續演出為人熟知的慈母角色。

Ms Florence Lim

A Hong Kong actress born in Vancouver, Florence Lim (birth name Lim Mei Yi) received her early education in Chinese schools in the Canadian city. She was fluent in Chinese and English, and wrote articles and poems in both languages. At age 12, she returned to Hong Kong where she met and eventually married Lai Man Wai in 1919. Lim was supportive of her husband’s career. In 1925, she made her screen debut as the leading actress in Rouge. A China Sun Motion Picture Company production, the film was Hong Kong’s first full-length feature. Lim also starred in a number of titles shot by Shanghai-based China Sun Shanghai and United Photoplay. They included Way Down West (1927), Mulan Joins the Army (1928), Spring Dream in the Old Capital (1930), Song of China (1935) and Song of a Kind Mother (1937). Lim returned to Hong Kong after the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression to continue her career. She was best known for her roles as a doting mother.

胡蝶原名胡瑞華,1924年入讀上海中華電影學校的演員訓練班; 1925年從影。1928年進入明星影片公司,主演轟動一時的武俠片《火燒紅蓮寺》。1931年於蠟盤配音片電影《歌女紅牡丹》擔綱女主角,該片被視為中國電影進入有聲年代的重要標記之作。1933年,上海《明星日報》舉辦電影皇后選舉,胡蝶以2萬多票當選,成為中國第一位電影皇后。同年參演的《姊妹花》被譽為中國電影史上的名作。抗戰期間,胡蝶往香港發展,曾擔演《胭脂淚》(1938)、《絕代佳人》(1940)等影片。戰後主演《某夫人》(1947)、《錦繡天堂》(1949)、《街童》(1960)等國粵語影片,1960年以《後門》榮獲亞洲影展最佳女主角獎。她參演《塔裡的女人》(1967)和《明月幾時圓》(1969)後息影。

Butterfly Hu (née Hu Shui Wah) made her debut as an actress in 1925, following a year on the acting course of Shanghai’s Zhonghua Film Company. She joined Mingxing Film Company in 1928 and, in the same year, appeared in the swordplay blockbuster The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple (1928). In 1931, she played the lead role in China’s first sound film, Red Peony the Showgirl (1931), a landmark work in the country’s transition to the sound era. In 1933, Hu became the first actress to win the “Movie Queen” title in a public poll by Shanghai’s Star Daily, with more than 20,000 votes. In the same year, she appeared in Twin Sisters, an important work in the history of Chinese cinema. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Hu came to Hong Kong where she made Rouge Tears (1938), The Perfect Beauty (1940) and other titles. After the war, Hu acted in a number of Mandarin and Cantonese films, such as Madame X (1947), Heavenly Souls (1949) and Street Boys (1960). Hu was named Best Actress for her role in Back Door (1960) at the Asian Film Festival in 1960. She retired in the late 1960s after completing The Woman in the Tower (1967) and When Dreams Come True (1969).

邵逸夫原名邵仁楞,號逸夫。電影業大亨。1924年與三位兄長在上海創辦天一影片公司,1926年往新加坡協助開拓市場。1957年,因二兄邵邨人的邵氏父子有限公司製作的影片在星馬巿場供不應求,邵逸夫為拓展製片業務,來港在清水灣興建東南亞最大規模的邵氏兄弟(香港)電影製片廠,成立邵氏兄弟(香港)有限公司,招聘、培養電影人才。邵氏在香港攝製的影片逾八百部,包括大受歡迎的粵語青春片《玉女驚魂》(1958)、《青春樂》(1959);《江山美人》(1959)、《梁山伯與祝英台》(1963)等黃梅調影片;《大醉俠》(1966)、《獨臂刀》(1967)等武俠片;《楊貴妃》(1955、1962)、《傾國傾城》(1975)等古裝宮闈片,更在亞洲影展和金馬獎屢獲獎項。60年代中,邵爵士看準電視將會成為最有潛質的媒體,投資電視廣播有限公司,並成為董事局主席。1987年,邵氏停產,但仍透過附屬公司投資電影,如《審死官》(1992)、《十萬火急》(1997)以及《72家租客》(2010)等。邵逸夫為電影事業奮鬥八十多載,成就卓越,貢獻良多,並在2006年獲頒亞太影展終身成就獎及2007年獲香港電影金像獎頒發世紀影壇成就大獎。

Sir Run Run Shaw

Born Shao Renleng, film and television mogul Sir Run Run Shaw was also known as Shao Yifu and Siu Yat Fu. In 1924, he and his three elder brothers co-founded Unique Film Productions in Shanghai. Two years later, he moved to Singapore to help open up the market for his family’s entertainment business. When Shaw & Sons, his second brother’s studio, proved unable to meet the overwhelming demand for films in Southeast Asia, Sir Run Run left for Hong Kong in 1957, where he established Shaw Brothers Studio and Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Limited. Located in Clear Water Bay, Shaw Brothers was the largest studio in Southeast Asia, one which not only made movies but also recruited and trained talent for the industry. The immensely prolific studio produced more than 800 works in Hong Kong, in a wide range of genres. There were Cantonese titles such as Sweet Girl in Terror (1958) and Young Rock (1959); Huangmeidiao opera films like The Kingdom and the Beauty (1959) and The Love Eterne (1963); martial arts classics such as Come Drink with Me (1966) and One-Armed Swordsman (1967); and epics including Princess Yang Kwei Fei (1955), The Magnificent Concubine (1962) and The Empress Dowager (1975). These movies were immensely popular and many won accolades at the Asian Film Festival and Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards. In the mid-1960s, seeing potential in television entertainment, Sir Run Run founded TVB (Television Broadcasts Limited) and became its chairman of the board some years later. Shaw Brothers ceased production in 1987, but continued to invest in films: Justice, My Foot! (1992), Lifeline (1997) and 72 Tenants of Prosperity (2010) were among the works that benefited from its backing. Sir Run Run was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 51st Asia-Pacific Film Festival in 2006, and the Century Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2007 for more than eight decades of unstinting dedication and enormous contributions to the film industry.


Ms Wong Man Lei

黃曼梨原名黃文素,又名黃蘭因。早年有「悲劇聖手」之稱。少時立志當演員,1930年向上海暨南影片公司自薦並成功加入影壇,以藝名黃曼麗參演《火燒白雀寺》(1930)、《江湖二十四俠》等默片。於暨南約滿後回港,加入聯華影業製片印刷有限公司港廠,與吳楚帆合演《古寺鵑聲》、《夜半槍聲》(1932)等默片。聯華結束後,又參演聲片《昨日之歌》(1935)和抗日電影《人生曲》(1937)等。雖然黃曼梨從默片到粵語片曾飾演多個不同類型的角色,但以惡家姑的形象最深入民心,演出作品逾300部,代表作有《敗家仔》(1952)、《苦海明燈》(1953)、《原野》(1956)、《吸血婦》(1962)、《瘋婦》(1964)等。她亦是「粵語片清潔運動」發起人和中聯電影企業有限公司股東之一,更曾任華南電影工作者聯合會兩屆理事長。1967年演畢《矇查查的愛情》(1967)後,因健康問題退休。1971年黃曼梨先後加入電視廣播有限公司及麗的電視演出多部電視劇。1995年,黃曼梨獲香港電影金像獎頒發終身成就獎。

Ms Wong Man Lei

Also known as Wong Man So and Wong Lan Yan, actress Wong Man Lei was hailed as “the Divine Star of Tragedies” in the early years of her career. In 1930, she became a trainee actress at Jinan Film Company in Shanghai and appeared in silent films Burns the White-Bird Temple (1930) and 24 Heroes (1930). Two years later, Wong joined United Photoplay in Hong Kong and was cast alongside Ng Cho Fan in silent productions Gunshot at Midnight (1932) and Cry of the Cuckoo in the Temple (1932). After the dissolution of United Photoplay, she made sound films Yesterday’s Song (1935) and Song of Life (1937) for other studios. Although Wong had proved her mettle in an array of roles spanning around 300 films, she was best known for her portrayals of obnoxious mothers-in-law and elderly women. Her more memorable works include The Prodigal Son (1952), A Son is Born (1953), Wilderness (1956), Vampire Women (1962), A Mad Woman (1964) and Confused Love (1967). Outside the studio, Wong was twice chief executive of the South China Film Industry Workers Union. She began acting in television dramas in the early 1970s, first for TVB and then RTV. Wong was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1995.


Mr Zhu Shi Lin

朱石麟先生

朱石麟在北京真光戲院對面上班時,因常往看戲而迷上電影。1922年,考入真光戲院兼職任編輯及翻譯。1923年,正式加入羅明佑的華北電影公司任編譯部主任。1926年,因患病致使胯關節僵硬,終身不能彎腰,但他臥病時仍編寫劇本。1930年首次執導,在真光戲院天台拍攝了短片《自殺合同》(1930 )。同年,到上海加盟羅明佑主持的聯華影業公司,任編譯部主任兼代經理,期間仍不斷撰寫劇本。從《歸來》(1934)開始當導演,其編導作品《慈母曲》(1936)被稱為中國電影經典之作。1946年來香港,後被永華電影製片廠有限公司招攬,執導《清宮秘史》(1948)。永華財困後,朱石麟轉投好友費穆的龍馬影片公司,拍攝了《誤佳期》(1951)、《一板之隔》(1952)等佳作。1954年,朱石麟改組龍馬,併入鳳凰影業公司。朱任藝術委員會主席,培養編導人才,也拍攝不少影片,如《夫妻經》(1958)、《故園春夢》(1964)等。他的編導作品逾百部,大多是體恤時代的文藝片。

Mr Zhu Shi Lin

Film director Zhu Shi Lin fell in love with cinema at a young age as his workplace in Beijing was situated opposite the True Light Theatre, which he frequented. In 1922, the theatre hired him as a part-time editor and translator. A year later, Zhu joined Lo Ming Yau’s North China Amusement Company as head of the translation department. However, he was soon struck by an illness that led to stiffness of the hip joint and the inability to bend from the waist for the rest of his life. During his convalescence, Zhu wrote scripts and, in 1930, shortly after he was able to walk again, he shot his first film on the rooftop of True Light Theatre. It was a short titled Suicide Contract (1930). That same year, he went to Shanghai to work as a writer and manager at Lo Ming Yau’s United Photoplay while continuing with his scriptwriting. Four years later, Zhu made his directorial debut with Coming Home (1934), after which he wrote and directed the Chinese cinema classic Song of a Kind Mother (1936). Zhu came to Hong Kong in 1946 where he helmed Sorrows of the Forbidden City (1948) for Yung Hwa Motion Pictures. When Yung Hwa became plagued by financial troubles, Zhu founded Loon-Ma Film Company with friend Fei Mu, and the studio went on to make Should They Marry? (1951), The Dividing Wall (1952) and various other titles. In 1954, Zhu merged Loon-Ma with Feng Huang Motion Picture Company. Heading the artistic committee of Feng Huang, he continued to direct and write while also training young talents in these skills. Some of his signature works for Feng Huang include Between Husband and Wife (1958) and Garden of Repose (1964).


Mr Tso Tat Wah

曹達華先生

1915-2007

曹達華15歲隻身往上海演出默片《關東大俠》(1928-31),1935年回港拍攝《山東響馬》(1936),1939年擢升主角,演出《烈女行》(1939 )。戰後創辦友聯影片公司,曹達華拍攝了《七劍十三俠》上、下集(1949)等武俠片,亦是友僑片場的老闆。從影以來共演出逾300電影,有「銀壇鐵漢」之美譽。曹達華曾在其中70多部「黃飛鴻」影片中扮演黃飛鴻的大弟子梁寬,角色深入民心。他與于素秋主演的武俠片亦成為時代的印記,其中最著名的是在「如來神掌」系列中扮演龍劍飛。此外,因他經常拍攝《陣陣驚魂》(1960)、《步步驚魂》(1961)等時裝偵探片,而有「華探長」之稱。80、90年代,他再度活躍於影視圈,在《最佳拍檔》(1982)、《夏日福星》(1985)等電影演出。2001年,曹達華獲香港影評人協會頒發金紫荊獎終身成就獎及在2003年獲香港電影金像獎頒發專業精神獎。

Mr Tso Tat Wah

At age 15, Tso Tat Wah moved to Shanghai, where he made his screen debut in the 13-episode silent film series A Warrior of the Northeast (1928-1931). In 1935, he resumed his acting career in Hong Kong with Bandits from Shandong (1936). A Woman of Virtue (1939) offered him his first chance to play the male lead. After the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Tso founded Yau Luen Film Company and began producing martial arts films such as the two-part Thirteen Heroes with Seven Swords (1949). He was also the owner of Yau KiuStudio. In his long and prolific career, Tso was involved in around 300 films, most in the martial arts genre, but also cloak-and-dagger movies. He gained a reputation as the “Man of Iron of the Silver Screen”. Tso appeared in more than 70 titles of the “Wong Fei Hung” series, mostly as the eponymous master’s head disciple “Leung Foon”, which made him a household name. Audiences also remember him as the hero who partners with Yu So Chow in martial arts films, the most popular being “Lung Kim Fei” in the “Buddha’s Palm” series. Thanks to the widespread popularity of his character in contemporary whodunit flicks such as The Kidnappers (1960) and Intense Moment (1961), he was nicknamed “Inspector Wah”. Tso was still active in the 1980s and 1990s, playing parts in Aces Go Places (1982) and Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars (1985). He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hong Kong Film Critics Association in 2001, and the Professional Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2003.


Mr Lo Duen

盧敦先生

盧敦畢業於廣東戲劇研究所附屬戲劇學校。1931年他與同學吳回、李晨風等在廣州組劇團。三十年代盧敦已在廣州參演合眾影片公司的《炮轟五指山》(1933)和紫薇影片公司的《璇宮金粉獄》(1934)等默片。盧氏1935年赴上海學習電影,1936年來港參與電影製作,1937開始編導工作,作品包括《天上人間》(1941)。戰後他參演和編導過多部出色的作品,幕前經常飾演反派角色,如《危樓春曉》(1953)中貪財好色的黃大班和《家》(1953)中的頑固老頭高老太爺,與他嚴肅的導演作品,如描寫戰爭遺憾的《此恨綿綿無絕期》(1948)、《羊城恨史》(1951)和社會寫實電影《十號風波》(1959)恰成對照。他亦是華南電影工作者聯合會創辦人之一,致力為影人爭取權益。1998年,盧敦獲香港影評人協會頒發金紫荊獎終身成就獎。

Mr Lo Duen

Director, playwright and actor Lo Duen studied theatre in Guangzhou and founded a theatre troupe in 1931 with classmates Ng Wui and Lee Sun Fung. He also acted in silent films including Shelling in Mountain Five Fingers (1933) and The Glittering Prison of the Jade Palace (1934). In 1935, Lo left Guangzhou for Shanghai to study film production before making his way to Hong Kong a year later. It was in Hong Kong that Lo became involved in filmmaking; Follow Your Dream (1941) was an early work that he wrote and directed. After a hiatus during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Lo rejoined the industry, writing, directing and acting in numerous memorable titles. He was frequently typecast as a villain, like the nefarious “Taipan Wong” in In the Face of Demolition (1953) or the obstinate patriarch in Family (1953). These characters are an interesting contrast to the films he helmed, which are marked by a concern for the poor and the deprived. Examples include historical tragedies Everlasting Regret (1948) and Tragedy in Canton (1951), and social realist drama Typhoon Signal No. 10 (1959). Lo was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Film Critics Association in 1998.


Mr Griffin Yue Feng

岳楓先生

導演

岳楓原名笪子春,編劇筆名葛瑞芬。1929年,他在上海進入電影界,憑執導《中國海的怒潮》(1933)和《逃亡》(1935),奠定其大導演地位。1949年,岳楓受張善琨之邀來香港,加入長城影業公司,拍攝《蕩婦心》((949)、《血染海棠紅》(1949),又為新華影業公司拍攝了周璇在香港的最後一部片電影《彩虹曲》(1953)。1953年,他開辦大方影片公司,拍了《小樓春曉》(1954),之後替電懋執導了《金蓮花》(1957 )、《情場如戰場》(1957)、《雨過天青》(1959)等片。1959年岳楓加盟邵氏公司至1974年退休,憑《畸人艷婦》(1960)與《為誰辛苦為誰忙》(1963)分別獲得亞洲影展最佳編劇獎和金馬獎最佳編劇獎。其後他執導了一系列的黃梅調歌唱片,包括《白蛇傳》(1962)、《花木蘭》(1964)及《三笑》(1969)等。岳楓多產而專業,共導演逾百部影片,他的電影技藝嚴謹,富感染力。1991年,岳楓獲香港電影導演會頒發終身成就獎。

Mr Griffin Yue Feng

Also known as Da Zichun and by his pseudonym Ge Ruifen, Griffin Yue Feng joined Shanghai’s film industry in 1929, whereupon he made a name for himself helming  Angry Tides of China’s Seas(1933) and Refugees (1935). Yue settled down in Hong Kong in 1949 and went on to make more than 80 films for various studios. He joined Great Wall studio at Zhang Shankun’s invitation and shot A Forgotten Woman (1949) and Blood Will Tell (1949). He also directed Rainbow as You Wish (1953), the last film in Hong Kong to star legendary singer and actress Zhou Xuan. In 1953, Yue founded Dafang Film Company, which shot A Love Story (1954). For MP & GI, he made classics Golden Lotus (1957), The Battle of Love (1957) and For Better, For Worse (1959). In 1959, Yue joined Shaw Brothers, where he remained until his retirement in 1974. The Deformed (1960) and Bitter Sweet (1963) garnered Best Screenplay at both the Asian Film Festival and the Golden Horse Awards. Yue subsequently shot a series of Huangmeidiao opera films such as Madame White Snake (1962) and Lady General Hua Mulan (1964). Yue directed more than 100 films in his career; his name was closely associated with sophisticated cinematic techniques and engaging romantic drama. He was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild in 1991.


Mr Kwan Tak Hing

關德興先生

關德興15歲拜小武新北學粵劇。1921年,關氏加盟祝華年劇團時,向班中小武靚就偷師,靚就失場,由他頂替,開始有人喚他新靚就,後得靚就同意,正式改名為新靚就。1921年,關德興在美國登台表演粵劇時,獲大觀聲片有限公司老闆趙樹燊邀請主演有聲粵語片《歌侶情潮》(1933),大受歡迎,繼而片約紛至。1936年關德興以《神鞭俠》的神鞭功夫震驚四座。1949年,在拍攝首部黃飛鴻電影《黃飛鴻傳上集之鞭風滅燭》時,他更於影片中表演其神鞭絕技。「黃飛鴻」此後發展成70多集的長壽電影系列。此外,關德興有「生武松」之譽,而其關公戲亦相當聞名,這些都被拍成電影《武松血濺獅子樓》(1956)、《關公月下釋貂蟬》(1956)、《關公千里送嫂》(1957)等。關德興一生熱衷慈善事業,發揚忠孝仁恕之道,抗戰期間更組團勞軍及宣傳抗日,有「愛國藝人」之稱。

Mr Kwan Tak Hing

Actor Kwan Tak Hing began practising Cantonese opera at age 15 under a performer of warrior roles named Sun Bak. In 1921, he joined Chuk Wah Lin Opera Troupe and honed his technique by observing warrior virtuoso Liang Chau. He was asked to step in for Liang Chau when the latter was absent, which earned him the moniker “Sun Liang Chau” (“New Liang Chau”). Later, with Liang Chau’s approval, he officially adopted Sun Liang Chau as his stage name. In 1921, while performing Cantonese opera in the US, he was invited by the owner of Grandview Film Company, Chiu Shu Sun, to star in the first Cantonese talkie, Blossom Time (1933). It was a big hit that cemented his status as an actor. In The Knight of the Whip (1936), Kwan stunned the audience with his whipping skills. In 1949, he played the title role in The Story of Wong Fei-Hung: Part One (1949), the first in a long-running series of more than 70 films about folk hero Wong Fei Hung. Kwan was best known for portraying the “God of War” and “Wu Song” (also known as “Mo Chung”), a fictional hero from the classical novel Water Margin, in films such as Mo Chung’s Bloody Fight on Lion’s Tower (1956), Kwan-Ti, God of War (1956) and General Kwan Escorts His Sister-in-Law on a Thousand Mile Journey (1957). Not dissimilar to the gallant personas he portrayed, Kwan was active in charitable work and a keen proponent of Confucian teachings. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he organised morale-boosting trips to the barracks and publicity for the armed resistance against the Japanese. Such efforts earned him the title ‘the Patriot Artist’.
