Actress and singer Cecilia Cheung was born in Hong Kong and went to high school in Australia. Upon returning to her hometown, she appeared in a soft drink commercial and caught the attention of director Stephen Chow, who invited her to play the leading role in King of Comedy (1999). The same year, she was cast as the female lead in Fly Me to Polaris (1999), which won her the Best New Performer Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Beautiful and charismatic, Cheung went on to star in dozens of movies, including Twelve Nights (2000), Wu Yen (2001), Second Time Around (2002), Running on Karma (2003), One Nite in Mongkok (2004) and The Promise (2005). In 2004, she won Best Actress at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Bauhinia Film Awards for Lost in Time (2003); she also received a Best Actress Award from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society for Running on Karma (2003). In 2001, Cheung starred in Failan (2001), a Korean production directed by Song Hae Sung. The film heightened her fame in Korea and won her a nomination in the Daejong Film Awards. Cheung left the silver screen after her marriage to Nicholas Tse in 2006; she resumed acting in 2010, appearing in All’s Well, Ends Well (2011).
